A story is a record of an event that can be true or imaginary. The purpose of the story is to impart a moral, capture a moment, or event, or inculcate values and just to entertain the readers. Story Writing is a language skill that tests the student’s creativity and writing skills.
Main Elements of a Short Story
- Theme It is the main idea or message of the story.
- Plot It is the logical connection among all parts ofthe story. A proper beginning, a middle, and an end are essential components of a good plot.
- Setting It is the time and location of the story.
- Characters The people, animals, or other living creatures of the story are its characters. A short story has one main character and very few minor characters to support the plot.
Points to be kept in Mind
Read the clue/outline carefully given in the question.
- Think about the possible plot and the characters.
- Start the story as instructed in the question.
- Starting or beginning should be brief and interesting.
- Build the plot by using dialogues and interesting points.
- End the story appropriately by giving a climax.
- A proper conclusion or moral can be given at the end of the story (if possible).
- Always give a title to the story.
- Re-read the story to make sure you have not made any mistakes in it.

Type 1 Based on Verbal Inputs
Question 1. Write a story with the help of the outlines given. Give the story a title and write down the moral of the story.
Ant and grasshopper lived in a grassy meadow……….summer time………plenty of food……ant worked hard collecting grains but the grasshopper lazed around………..grasshopper mocked ant for working………..ant told grasshopper to save food for winter but it didn’t follow the advice………winter came and grasshopper hungry and helpless………asked ant for help but ant denied the request………grasshopper realized his mistake.

The Ant and the Grasshopper
Once, in a tall grassy meadow, there lived an ant and a grasshopper. In the summer when there was no scarcity of food, the ants worked hard day and night. It was collecting grains from the nearby farms.
The whole time the grasshopper was not working at all. He was lying lazily while watching the ant. He even mocked the ant saying that the ant was working unnecessarily. The ant was worried for the grasshopper and told him to start collecting food.
However, the grasshopper just laughed it off as a joke. When winter came, the grasshopper couldn’t find any food and was getting very hungry.
He thought of asking the ant for food since the ant had stored food. But the ant scolded him for not taking the advice and asked him to go away. The grasshopper regretted not working when he still had time.
The moral of the story: Always be prepared for the expected future.
Question 2. Write a story with the help of the outlines given. Add the title and moral of the story.
A farmer bought a well from a wicked the wicked man refused to give him water saying he sold only the well………farmer went to the king……king called for the wicked man……asked him why he denied access to the well water…..king asked the wicked man to take away all the water since well is farmer’s…….wicked man defeated and apologized.

He needed water for his farm so he bought a well from a man. When the farmer went to fetch water, the man told him that he was not permitted to take water from the well as he only sold the well and not the water inside the well.
The farmer understood the wickedness of the man. He was frustrated and went to seek help from the king. The king called the wicked man to the court to explain the reason behind his action towards the farmer. The king thought for a while and came up with a solution.
The king told the wicked man that since the well now belonged to the farmer he was not allowed to keep his water inside the well.
He ordered the wicked man to either pay the farmer for using his well or take out all the water from the well. The wicked man realized that his plan had failed. He apologized to the king as well as the farmer and took back his words.
The moral of the story Cheating never goes unpunished.
Question 3. Read the outlines below and develop a story by using them and your ideas. A man and his wife………their goose laid a golden egg every day………. They wished to become rich fast ………thought the bird had gold inside killed it………lost even an egg every day.
Answer: The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs
Once upon a time, a man and his wife wanted to buy cows and a goose for their farm. They went to the market and bought three cows and a goose for a small amount of money.
They did not like how the goose looked but needed its eggs. The next day when they went to collect the goose’s egg, they found that she had laid a golden egg.
The man and his wife sold the egg for a huge price. This became a daily routine for them as the goose laid one golden egg every day.
Soon the man and his wife became rich. However, even then, they felt that they were not rich enough. They had become greedy and wanted to be rich fast. They imagined that the bird must have a good store of gold inside it. So, they killed the bird to get the whole gold at once.
However, after killing the bird they found it as ordinary as any other goose. Thus, they neither got any gold nor could they enjoy having a golden egg daily since the goose had been killed.
The moral of the story Greed can lead to one’s downfall.
Question 4. Read the outlines given below and develop a story based on the outlines. Provide a title and mention the lesson/moral provided by the story.
Mother dog and puppies lived on a farm………naughty puppies……..mother told kids not to go near well one pup got curious and went………pup looked down the well………saw his reflection…….mistook it for another pup……jumped down to fight………started to drown………the farmer saved him.

Once on a big farm, there lived a mother dog and her puppies. Since the puppies were little and always playing around, the mother told the pups to not go near the well. She tried to warn them of the trouble of going there as her pups were naughty.
However, one of the pups got curious and thought of visiting the well. On one fine day, the pup sneaked out and went beside the well. When he looked down the well, to his surprise, he saw another pup reflected on the water’s surface.
He thought it was a different pup and wanted to fight it. He jumped down the well but unfortunately, there was only water.
As a result, he was drowning helplessly. He cried for help. Hearing the sound of a pup crying, a farmer came running and picked up the pup. The pup was ashamed of his action and promised to never disobey his mother again.
The moral of the story Always listen to the advice of your elders.
Question 5. Read the outlines of a story given below. Develop them in a complete story.
A man had four sons…… quarreling with each other…….father was worried…..tried to make them realize their folly……bundle of sticks…..each to break it …but failed……untied the bundle. broken……….united they would be stronger.

Father and his Quarrelling Sons
A man had four sons who were always quarreling with each other. They always had one topic or another to fight. Their quarrels increased so much that they hated the sight of each other and so, started living separately.
This made the man worried. He wanted to make them realize their folly and unite them. So, one day he called them and asked them to tie a few sticks in a bundle.
Then, he asked each son in turn to break it across his knee. Each tried and failed. The father asked them to untie the bundle and break the individual sticks. Now, each of them easily broke those sticks.
The man then said to his sons, “If you are united like sticks in a bundle you will be strong and your enemy cannot harm you. But if you quarrel like this you will be weak and you can be attacked by anyone.”
Moral of the story Unity is strength.

Question 6. Write a story with the help of the visual given below. Give a title also.

The Wolf and the Crane
Once upon a time in a green dense jungle, there lived a wolf and a crane. Both the wolf and the crane hated each other and did not talk kindly to each other. The reason behind their hatred is their first meeting.
The wolf and the crane met a few years ago. The wolf was greedily eating the deer it had hunted. While eating, he was not careful, and a bone got stuck in his throat.
He tried to cough it so that it could come out but nothing happened. Then, he approached the crane and requested her to pull it out with the help of her long beak.
“I will pay you for it”, he added. The crane pulled out the bone easily hoping to become the wolf’s friend. However, after she took out the small piece of bone the wolf thanked her rudely and started leaving.
The crane cried “Where is my fee?” ‘Well’, retorted the wolf quickly showing his teeth, “Go and tell your friends proudly that you put your head into a wolf’s mouth and did not get it bitten off.”
Question 7. Look at the given image and write a story titled ‘Hidden Treasure’

Once upon a time, there was an old farmer. He had four very lazy sons. They did not do anything for the entire day. They would sit in their rooms and order people around to do things for them. The old man was fed up with his sons and tried to explain the value of work to them but to no avail.
Once the farmer fell very ill. He thought of a plan. He called his sons together and told them that there was a treasure hidden in the field.
They need to dig the field to get the treasure. After saying this the farmer died. His sons dug the field. However, they did not find the treasure. Their neighbor advised the sons to sow seeds in the field.
They did so and the crop was very good. Then they understood what their father wanted them to do. They worked hard in life and became very rich. They were happy.
The moral of the story Work is worship.
Question 8. Look at the given image and write a story titled ‘Bad Company’.

Once a rich man had only one son. As a result, the boy was very pampered. He had everything he wanted and lived a very luxurious life.
However, as he grew up he fell into bad company. He used to spend his entire day outside roaming in the street doing nothing but eating junk food and spending money.
His father advised him to leave the bad company but he did not leave. So, the father thought of a plan. One day, he brought some fresh apples and a rotten apple. He asked his son to put all the apples in a basket. After two days, all the apples were rotten.
His father told him that one rotten apple had made all the apples bad, so one bad boy would make all the boys bad. The boy learned a lesson. He left the bad company. His father was very happy. The moral of the story is Better alone than in a bad company.
