Rules For Subject-Verb Agreement

Some rules should be followed to ensure that a sentence is grammatically correct. These rules are

1. If the subject is singular, it takes a singular verb and if the subject is plural, it takes a plural verb.

Singular Verb Example:

  1. Rohan wakes up early in the morning.
  2. Riya and Diya are friends.

2. When two or more nouns are joined by the conjunction ‘and’, a plural verb is used.

Conjunction Example: The doctors and Rani are going to attend the seminar.

3. When there are two subjects but they refer to one idea, a singular verb is used.

Singular verb Example: Peanut butter and jelly is my favourite breakfast.

4. When two or more singular nouns are joined by or’ or ‘nor’, a singular verb is used.

Singular nouns Example: A pen or a pencil is mandatory to be carried into the seminar.

Two subjects connected by either/or, or neither/nor require a singular or plural verb depending on the subject that comes later.

A singular or plural verb Example:

  • Either Jane or Mary is going to qualify for the semi-finals.
  • Neither the diary nor the pens are on the rack
  • Uncountable nouns take a singular verb.

Singular Example: The time for the inauguration of the magazine has come.

  • The words here, there, and where are not subjects.
  • They introduce a sentence in inverted order. The verb must agree with the subject of a sentence.

Plural Example: Here are the documents you asked for.

(Here, ‘documents’ is the subject of the sentence)

A singular verb must be used with the singular indefinite pronouns, each, neither, either, anyone, everyone, no one, someone, anybody, everybody, nobody, somebody, anything, everything, nothing, and something.

Singular Verbs Example:

  • Nobody has brought their car.
  • Some subjects, although they might appear plural

Singular verbs Example: News, Gymnastics, Physics, Statistics etc.) are singular in meaning and take a singular verb.

A singular verb Example:

  • Measles is the only childhood disease I haven’t had.
  • A singular verb is generally used after words
  • denoting an amount (time, money, measurement, weight, volume).

Titles of books, magazines and films take singular verbs, even if they contain plural nouns.

Singular Example: The Birds is a movie from 1963.
