Class 6 English Grammar
A sentence can be defined as a group of words that is meaningful and makes complete sense in itself. All sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a question mark (?), an exclamation mark (!), or a full stop (.)
Sentence Types for Class 6
Example:
- I love my country.
- Don’t You like this weather?
- What a Pleasant weather!
Parts of a Sentence
A sentence can be divided into two parts – a subject and a predicate.
Subject It is the part of a sentence that contains the noun or pronoun acting in the sentence.
Parts of a Sentence Example:
- Jaipur is also known as the Pink City.
- Shreya drives a car to work every day.
- Preeti is writing a Poem.
Predicate It is the part of a sentence that tells us something about the subject. It tells about the action that is being performed by the subject.
Types of Sentences for Class 6
Predicate Example:
- All the food was eaten by the puppy.
- Shreya drives a car to work every day.
- Jaipur is also known as the Pink City.
Kinds Of Sentences
Sentences can be classified into the following types
Assertive/ Declarative Sentences
Sentences that are used to state a general statement, fact, or opinion are called Assertive or Declarative Sentences’ These sentences always end with a full stop (‘).
Declarative Sentences Example:
- The Earth revolves around the Sun (Fact)
- I enjoy reading sci-fi novels. (Opinion)
Assertive sentences can further be divided into two types

Positive or affirmative sentences are statements that express a fact, an opinion, or an action in a positive manner.

Interrogative Sentences
Sentences that are used to ask questions are called Interrogative Sentences. These sentences always end with a question mark (?).
There are three types
Yes/No questions are questions that can be answered with ‘yes’ or ‘no” They generally begin with a helping verb followed by the subject and the main verb.
Interrogative Sentences Example:
- Did You Finish Your homework?
- Are you going to the Party?
Wh-questions are questions that begin with a wh-word (who, what, when, where, why, which, how).

Question tags are short questions added to the end of a statement. They are used to confirm information or seek agreement. Question tags are a way of turning a statement into a question

Imperative Sentences
Sentences that are used to give commands, advice, suggestions, requests, or warnings are called Imperative Sentences. They generally enclose a full stop (.)
Imperative Sentences Example
- Close the door quietly” (command)
- Eat a balanced diet for better health. (advice)
- Could you help me with this assignment? (request)
- Let’s go for a walk in the park. (suggestion)
- Be cautious while crossing the street. (warning)

Exclamatory Sentences
Sentences that are used to express a strong emotion or feeling are called Exclamatory Sentences. These sentences always end with an exclamation mark (!).
Exclamatory Sentences Example:
