Noun forms with answers
Based on the number nouns can be classified into the following types
Countable Nouns
Nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns.
Countable noun answers the question ‘how many’.
Countable Nouns Example:
- Sheila bought seven oranges.
- He went home after six months.
- He owns many watches.
Uncountable Nouns
Nouns that cannot be counted are called uncountable nouns.
An uncountable noun answers the question ‘how much’.
Uncountable Nouns Example:
- There is only a little salt left in the jar.
- My shoes are filled with sand.
- There is too little light in this room.
Singular and Plural Nouns
Countable nouns can be Singular and Plural
- Singular Nouns Nouns that refer to only one person, place, animal, thing, or organization are called singular nouns.
- Example:
- Can you please move that table?
- The room is occupied.
- Plural Nouns Nouns that refer to more than one person, place, animal, thing, or organisation are called plural nouns.
- Example
- Arrange the chairs neatly.
- The students are going on a school trip.
Forming Plural Forms
We follow the rules given below to convert singular nouns into plural nouns.
- By simply adding ‘-s’ at the end of nouns.
- Singular — Plural
- Rat — rats
- Ship — ships
- Flower — flowers
- Door — doors
- By Adding ‘-es’ to the nouns which end in ‘sl ‘ssi ‘shi cn, x, z.
- Singular —Plural
- Dress —dresses
- Wish —wishes
- Witch —witches
- Fox —foxes
- Quiz —quizzes
- Glass —glasses
- When the word ends with ‘-y’, replace the ‘-y’ with ‘-ies’.

Example:- Baby— babies
- Sky —skies
- Lorry —lorries
- Singular —Plural
- Most nouns ending in ‘-o’ form the plural by adding ‘-or-es’, depending on the word.
- Singular —Plural
Example- Studio —studios
- Potato— Potatoes
- Plano —pianos
- Hero— heroes
- Logo— logos
- Volcano —volcanoes
- Singular —Plural
- Singular nouns ending in ‘f ‘ or ‘f are converted to plural form by replacing it with ‘ves’.
- Singular— Plural
For example:- knife—knives
- Thief—thieves

Exception
Some nouns are converted to their plural forms by changing the vowels.
Example:
- Man men
- Thesis theses
- Tooth teeth
- Datum data
- Fungus – fungi
Plural of Compound Nouns.
Compound nouns are nouns formed by combining two or more words to create a single, more specific term.
For example;
- Runner-up runners-up
- Sister-in-law sisters-in-law
- Passer-by passers-by
- Milk-man milk-me
